WHAT IS A CHEMICAL PEEL
September is officially the beginning of the peel season at Dr Amina Adeniran’s House of Rejuvenation™. According to the British Association of Dermatologist, chemical peels have been used in ancient Egypt from over 3500 years ago to improve fine lines, acne scars, pigmentation, glow and health of the skin. A chemical peel is a cosmetic procedure that involves the application of a chemical solution to the skin, resulting in the exfoliation (lifting off) of the outer layers. This can be applied to skin on the face, limbs and trunk, depending on the cause of concern and treatment goals. This process helps to improve the appearance of the skin by removing dead skin cells, promoting new cell growth, and enhancing overall skin texture and tone. Chemical peels can vary in strength and depth, making them suitable for various skin types and conditions. At the House of Rejuvenation™ by expert skin doctor, Dr Amina Adeniran, the chemical peels specially selected for our clients can be used in all skin types, including skin of colour. Catering to all skin shades is what we pride ourselves on at the clinic.
WHY CHOOSE A DOCTOR-LED CHEMICAL PEEL WITH US
When it comes to your skin, expertise matters. At our Bromley clinic and Harley Street practice, every chemical peel is performed and overseen by Dr. Amina Adeniran - an NHS doctor with over 14 years of medical experience and advanced training in aesthetics. This ensures the highest standards of safety, precision, and care - something you simply don’t get with salon facials or non-medical providers. A doctor-led chemical peel in Bromley offers local convenience and trust, while our Harley Street clinic provides access to London’s most prestigious medical district. Patients choose us because they want results-driven skin rejuvenation with the confidence of medical oversight, tailored to their unique skin type and concern..
WHAT TYPES OF CHEMICAL PEELS ARE THERE
Chemical peels can vary in strength and depth, making them suitable for various skin types and conditions. The depths of chemical peels can be categorized into three main types: superficial, medium, and deep peels.
Superficial chemical peels target the outermost layer of skin (epidermis) and are typically mild, using alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) such as lactic acid or glycolic acid, or beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) such as salicyclic acid. In superficial chemical peels you do not tend to notice a peeling but a 'dusting' of the skin at most, leaving a healthy glow.
Medium depth chemical peels penetrate deeper into the skin, reaching the middle layer (dermis) and often utilize trichloroacetic acid (TCA) alongside other acids and antioxidants. Antioxidants such as glutathione, vitamin C, retinoic acid, and kojic acid are included in the mixes in various degrees. At Dr Amina Adeniran’s House of Rejuvenation™ we use medical grade premium brands of Alumier, Obagi and The Perfect Peel, which are essentially superficial and medium depth chemical peels respectively, as these are proven to be sufficient to treat mostl skin concerns, and suitable for all skin types.
Deep chemical peels go even further, affecting the lower layers of the dermis and usually involve phenol. This is carried out by Dermatologists as a medical treatment. It requires months of preparation and would need an extended period of time for recovery.
The choice of peel depth depends on the specific skin concerns being addressed and the desired results. A thorough skin consultation is highly advised by a trained health care professional, beforehand.
WHAT TO EXPECT BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER A CHEMICAL PEEL: WILL MY SKIN PEEL AND DOES IT HURT?
At our clinic, the application of the chemical itself takes less than 15 minutes and is pain-free. At most, a tingling or warm sensation for a few minutes is experienced. This settles minutes later, no more than 5minutes. Your appointment will include a thorough consultation and after care advice. The total time of 45minutes is allocated for your appointment. Usually no peeling is noted with superficial peels. Medium depth peels cause the skin to shed and visibly peel from Day 3 to Day 7 on average. Peeling of the skin is more noticeable with medium depth and deep chemical peels. The deeper the peel the more likely to experience a degree of discomfort such as tingling and itch, from Day 1-7 after application. Swelling is noted more with deep chemical peels. A review is advised 2-4 weeks later and on average for most skin concerns, a course of 1 to 4 peel sessions, each spaced 2-4 weeks apart, is advised.
BENEFITS OF CHEMICAL PEELS FOR AGEING, PIGMENTATION, ACNE, AND ACNE SCARS
Patients at our Bromley clinic and Harley Street practice often choose chemical peels for their proven ability to:
Reduce fine lines and wrinkles by stimulating collagen and renewing skin cells
Fade pigmentation and dark spots caused by sun damage, melasma, or uneven skin tone
Improve acne-prone skin by unclogging pores and resurfacing damaged areas
Minimise acne scars for smoother, clearer skin texture
Brighten dull, tired skin to restore a radiant, youthful glow
Deliver safe long-lasting results with doctor-led precision and tailored treatment plans
While chemical peels are highly effective on their own, they can deliver even more powerful results when combined with other doctor-led treatments. For example, pairing a peel with Profhilo enhances skin hydration and elasticity from within, while treatments like microneedling or fillers can target deeper lines and restore lost volume. At our Bromley and Harley Street clinics, we often design personalised combination plans to maximise rejuvenation and achieve natural, long-lasting results.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE TREATMENT
Aftercare following a chemical peel is crucial for optimal results and skin recovery. Patients are typically advised to avoid sun exposure, wear sunscreen diligently, and use gentle skincare products for several days post-treatment. It is also important to keep the skin hydrated and to avoid picking or peeling the skin as it heals. The end result of a safe chemical peel for all skin types can be a brighter, smoother, and more youthful-looking complexion, with improved skin clarity and texture, leading to increased confidence in one’s appearance.
CHEMICAL PEELS VERSUS FACIALS: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?
Many patients ask whether a chemical peel or a facial will deliver better results. At our Bromley clinic and Harley Street practice, we explain it simply: facials are ideal for ‘refresh’ cleansing, hydration, and short-term radiance, while chemical peels achieve deeper, longer-lasting skin rejuvenation. A medical-grade chemical peel in Bromley or Harley Street goes beyond pampering -it removes damaged skin cells, stimulates collagen, and targets fine lines, pigmentation, and acne scarring. If you’re looking for results-driven treatment under the care of a doctor, a chemical peel offers a more powerful solution than a traditional facial, with the reassurance of Harley Street expertise and the convenience of Bromley access.
